Winter Solstice Retreat
Time & Location
About the Event
“Silence is golden.” Only when we are silent can we truly hear ourselves. This retreat uses the strength and intensity of the yearly Baby Yang time of year, i.e. the Winter Solstice, to achieve inner connectedness and a state of harmony with the Dao. When we cultivate ourselves and tune into the macrocosmos it can help us build a strong immune system, replenish the Qi in our internal organs and gives us a strong springboard to flourish at Springtime.
Winter is the time of the kidneys, which must be protected and nourished. This is done by storing our energy rather than expending it. It is the most yin of the seasons. When the weather turns cold, everything in nature goes to sleep. As the Yellow Emperor’s Internal Classic, the Nei Jing, tells us, ideally we should reduce our activity, go to bed earlier and get up later so as not to ‘disturb the yang at all’. Like fish sinking to the bottom of an icy pond, or like a daffodil bulb in the cold ground, we should let our energy sink deeper inside us. This is not the time to start jogging or aerobics or anything else that makes you sweat. Avoid rushing around. Instead go to bed early and get up late. Stay inside where it’s warm and rest. And the Winter Solstice falls on December 22nd perhaps reminding us that we need to take time to quieten down, internalise, be peaceful and take lots of rest. If you can follow this practice for a few days surrounding the equinox, you will reap the benefits in the months that follow.
